A fierce foe: Family’s journey with son’s kidney disease

You’d never know they were connected. Not just from looking. There’s Alonzo Mourning, a literal giant of a man. Six feet, 10 inches tall. Somewhere north of 250 pounds. A retired NBA All-Star who played for 16 seasons and won a championship with Dwayne Wade, Shaquille O’Neal and the Miami Heat. And there is my son, Wayne Washington II.

Following a routine physical, I found out that I had kidney disease. Doctors noticed some abnormalities in my body chemistry and they found out that I had a rare kidney disease called focal segmental glomerulesclerosis. It’s a disease that scars the filters in the kidney.

Miami Transplant Institute Honors Alonzo Mourning with First Humanitarian Award

When the man of the moment, Miami Heat all star and philanthropist Alonzo Mourning, walked on stage to accept the inaugural Miami Transplant Institute Humanitarian Award, a crowd of nearly 400 stood up and applauded thunderously. Mourning, with customary humility, thanked the presenter, UM President Donna E. Shalala, and the audience, which included several of his fellow organ transplant recipients.

Alonzo Mourning Access to Care Act

Former Miami Heat stand-out and NBA Defensive Player of the Year Alonzo Mourning, who is also a kidney transplant recipient and leading patient advocate for those suffering from kidney disease and kidney failure, is expected to receive an unusual honor today when the Florida Legislature considers renaming a bill after him that is currently up for vote.
