Over years ago Finnish runner Hannes Kolehmainen spiced up his training for the Olympics with interval sessions, and hard-working Hannes was rewarded for his endeavours in the shape of gold in the 5,m, 10,m and cross-country events. To be clear, most of the interval workouts researchers have studied focus solely on aerobic exercise. Burpees is a two-part exercise that involves a push-up, followed by a leap in the air. There are multiple protocols under the HIIT umbrella, the most popular of which might just be Tabata training.

While these workouts provide excellent benefits and burn calories, they training cardio not the most efficient way to spend your time working out if you lack time and quick, sustainable results are your goal. Higher intensity workouts can be more enjoyable, boost mood and reduce perceived exertion better than moderate intensity, continuous exercise sessions. In the periods after I hit the exercise bike, my metabolic rate ramped up — but only by a few more calories each minute, and the effect wore off within half an hour of exercising. The after burn effect of HIIT can actually boost your metabolism for up to 48 hours after your workout.

One example: Exercise 20 minutes in the morning before work, walk 20 minutes on your lunch break, and exercise for 20 minutes after dinner. Sprinting Sprints outside, on a treadmill, or even up stairs or bleachers are great to burn the most calories in the least amount of time. When it feels easy, add a round or two, but drop the RPE slightly. Rest for 30 seconds at the end, then repeat for three to five rounds. Now things get complicated.
